A 5 m wide lawn is cultivated all along the outside of a rectangular plot measuring 60m x30m. What is the total area of the lawn?

║⊕ANSWER⊕║

Area of the lawn = Area of outer rectangle - Area of inner rectangle.  --- (1)

Measure of outer rectangle = length = 60 + 5 + 5 = 70m

                                                =Width = 30 + 5 + 5 = 40m

Area of outer rectangle = length * width

                                         = 70 * 40

                                         = 2800 m²  --- (2)

Area of inner rectangle is given directly = 60 * 30

                                                                      = 1800 m²  -- (3)

Substitute (2) and (3) in (1), we get

Area of lawn = 2800 - 1800

                      = 1000 m²

∴Area of the lawn is 1000 m²
