to form a basic oxide Y.Identify X and Y What would happen if Y is dissolved in

substance 'x' is Magnesium ribbon and 'y' is magnesium oxide .

⇒ Mg + O2 = 2MgO

when magnesium ribbon reacts with oxygen to form magnesium oxide.

When magnesium oxide reacts with water to form Magnesium hydroxide.

it is basic in nature.

⇒ when its reacts with water to form magnesium hydroxide  

MgO + H2O = Mg(OH)2

⇒ magnesium is reducing agent and  H2O is oxidising agent
