Horizontal power sharing:

  1. It shares power between different organs of the government such as the legislature,executive and judiciary.
  2. Different organs of government exercise different powers.
  3. There is a concept of checks and balances in order to check the exercise of unlimited powers of the organs.

Vertical division of power:

  1. In this the power shared among government at different levels, like Union, state and local levels.
  2. In this constitution clearly lays down the power of different levels of the government.
  3. There is no checks and balances because, the powers are clearly given by the constitution from the higher level to the lower level.
