Working tables and shelves in your chemistry laboratory are covered with tiles not wood.  

There are various harmful chemicals used in a chemistry lab. They may have a corrosive action on the wood. They may react with the metal and may produce hazardous gases which can cause harm to us. These chemicals do not react with tiles. Therefore, tiles is used on table and shelves of chemistry lab.

Acids taste sour. However, they must not be tasted to be identified.  

Acids in sour foods are safe to eat, but many acids are not safe to eat. But it would be dangerous to taste an unknown compound.
