Q3 Humanity used 160,000 Terawatt-hours of energy in 2015. If there are 7.4 billion people on earth and 8766 hours per year, how many Watts did each person use on average?

Given:

Energy used by humanity in the year 2015 = 160,000 Terawatt-hours

∵ 1 Terawatt = 10¹² Watt

∴ 160,000 Terawatt-hours = 160,000 × 10¹² Watt-hours = 16 × 10¹⁶ Watt-hours = 1.6 × 10¹⁷ Watt-hours

No. of people on earth = 7.4 billion = 7.4 × 10⁹

No. of hours per year = 8766

To find:

Watts i.e., power used by each person on an average

Solution:

We have the total watt-hours a year and no. of hours in a year, by dividing we will get the utilization of power  in a year.

∴ Power used in a year is,

= \frac{Energy\: used\: in\: a \:year}{No.\:of\:hours\:per\:year}

= \frac{1.6 \:\times\: 10^1^7 Watt-hours}{8766\:hours}

= 1.825 × 10⁻⁴ × 10¹⁷ Watts

= 1.825 × 10¹³ Watts

Now, we have to find how much power is used by each person on an average, which we will get by the following calculations:

∴ Power used by each person on an average is,

= \frac{Power\:used\:in\:a\:year}{No.\:of \:people\:on \:earth}

= \frac{1.825 \:\times\: 10^1^3}{7.4 \:\times\: 10^9}

= 0.2466 × 10⁽¹³⁻⁹⁾

= 0.2466 × 10⁴

= 2466 Watts

Thus, each person used 2466 Watts on an average.
