therefore , x - y = 5 -------------(1)

and x + y = 9 -------------(2)

Adding eq. (1),(2)

(x-y)+(x+y)=5+9

=> x-y+x+y=14

=> 2x = 14

=> x = 7

Now putting the value of x in th (1) eq.

x - y = 5

=> 7 - y = 5

=> 7= 5 + y

=> 7 - 5 = y

=> 2 = y

Therefore the value of x and y are 7 and 2 .
