Well for balanced diet go for 1500 cal would be perfect for 12 year old.

Start your day with quality foods like Oats or Corn Flakes

Then at the mid period give him some light food like a bread butter (peanut butter) or bread with milk or if possible go for some home made foods like idli or upma. At lunch rice, if you eat rice daily or Roti is also fine, some green vegetables, I'd suggest to eat non veg 4 times a week. Go for healthy food rather than Junk foods. Don't go for oily food. As all that glitters are not gold. Fruits nuts are necessary as you need to balance the fat. You need some fat in daily basis.
