Answer:

There had been a heavy rain for a week which had flooded the village. The flood had caused heavy damage to people. As is usual, the help from the Government reached quite late. Since the schools had been closed until the flood subsided, 14 year old Gobind had nothing to keep him much occupied. Sitting for hours together inside the home was boring and monotonous. He wanted to see the flooded river; dodging everyone’s eye he sneaked out to have a look a look at the river in spate.

As he walked along on the raised sidewalk along the inundated road to the river in the drizzle, his heart beat faster with fear and excitement mixed. He was wondering whether he was doing the right thing. From the distance he could he hear the river roaring. No sooner he saw the river he was scared to see the mighty current in full swell carrying myriad of broken trees, branches, animals that were doomed to be drowned. Precariously he went closer to the edge. There was no one around.

Suddenly Gobind’s eyes were caught by something moving just near the bank. He looked closely at it; a puppy was struggling very hard to swim up to the bank. But the strong current was pulling it away from the bank. Gobind was deeply moved. He sprang into action. He looked around to see if there was any branch or log he could take hold of. Luckily he found one; he shoved it as farther as he could towards the struggling puppy. Finally it succeeded in getting on to it and climbing upon it came onto the bank. It thanked Gobind with a vigorous wagging of its tail.

As it was getting dark, Gobind thought of rushing home and the dog followed him. It is said that the pup lived at Gobind’s house for many years. It grew into a very strong dog and always accompanied Gobind wherever he went.  Their friendship became the talk of the village and the surrounding areas.
