Q30. An organic compound 'X' has molecular formula C2H4O2 and is acidic in
nature When 'X' is heated with compound Y, a compound Z with formula
C4H8O2 is obtained which gives vapours with fruity smell. But when sodium salt of
X is heated with conc. H2SO4, a gas 'W is obtained which is found in marshy area.

a】compound X has formulaC2H4O2 which is ethanoic acid.

Compound Y formula C2H5OH which is ethanoic acid.

Compound Z has formula C2H802 which is ester.

Compound W has formula CO2 which is carbon diaoxide.

●Compound X has formula C2H4O2 which is acidic in nature so as it is acidic so its an acid .Acid with formula C2H4O2 that is with 2 carbon is ethanoic acid.

●When X is heated with Y we getZ which is C4H8O2 which has fruity smell so we all know it follows general formula of CnH2nO2 and as it has fruity smell so by its smell it must be an ester and the reaction is called esterification reaction.Since ester is formed by reaction of an acid and an alcohal hence compound Y must be of two carbon alcohal that is ethanol.

●Now when sodium salt of an acid is heated with conc H2SO4 we get a gas W found in marshy area the gas found in marshy area is cabon diaoxide hence compound W is CO2.

◆X=ethanoic acid

◆Y=ethanol

◆Z=ester.

◆W=carbon diaoxide.

b】reactions of the compounds as shown in attachment below:--
