The nitro-group (−NO2) is an withdrawing group while the methyl group (−CH3) is an electron donating group. The presence of nitro group decreases the electron density in the O−H bond. As a result, it is easier to lose a proton and hence, para-nitrophenol is more acidic than para-methyl phenol.
