Retting is the process employing the action of micro - orangism and moisture on plants to dissolve or rot away much of the cellular tissues and pectins surrounding bast- fibre bundles, and so facilitating separation of the fibre from the stem.

Hope it helps !!

retting is a process done in order to obtain jute fibre from jute plant . During this process jute plants are made to sink in stagnant water of ponds for few days when the gummy skin rots out to separate fibres.
