1. Metals are very hard except for sodium. (and there are many exceptions)
2. Metals are generally malleable and ductile.  
3. They are shiny and lustrous.  

Non-metals                          

1. Non metals are soft except for diamonds.( there are many exceptions)
2. Non metals are generally brittle and can break down into smaller pieces.
3. They are not shiny and are non lustrous.
