The frequency of sound heard by a man on a train, moving away from the church is 617.64 Hz.

A church bell rings at a frequency of 700 Hz every hour.

We have to find the frequency heard by a man on a train, moving away from the church at the speed of 40 m/s.

We have to use Doppler's effect,

If observer is moving away from the stationary source,

f=\left(\frac{v-v_0}{v}\right)f_0

  • Where f₀ is initial frequency.
  • v is the speed of sound.
  • v₀ is the speed of observer.
  • f is apparent frequency observed by observer.

Here,

f₀ = 700 Hz, v = 340 m/s , v₀ = 40 m/s

∴ f = (340 - 40)/340 × 700

= 21000/34

= 617.64 Hz

Therefore the frequency of sound heard by man on a train is 617.64Hz.
