The n-factor of thiosulphate ion when it is converted into sulphate ion will be 8.

Chemical equation for conversion of thiosulphate to sulphate:

Na₂S₂O₃         +      4Cl₂         +    5H₂O  =  2NaHSO₄ + 8HCl

(thiosulphate)       (chlorine)       (water)     (sulphate)     (hydrochloride)

The oxidation state of sulphur in thiosulphate is +2

The oxidation state of sulphur in sulphate is +6

Hence, there is a change of 4 electrons.

But two atoms of sulphur are involved in thiosulphate,

Therefore, 4 × 2 = 8 electrons.

The number of electrons exchanged will be the n-factor which is 8.
