Q5.Calculate the difference in the formulae and molecular masses for (a) CH3OH and C2H5OH (b) C2H5OH and C3H7OH, and (c) C3H7OH and C4H90H *Is there any similarity in these three?

* Arrange these alcohols in the order of increasing carbon atoms to get a family. Can we call this family a homologous series?

Answer:

Hey mate here is the answer

Explanation:

Difference in molecular formulae:

a) C2H5OH - CH3OH = CH2

similarly for the options (b) & (c) also the difference in molecular formulae is CH2

Difference in masses:

a) mass of C2H5OH = 34u

mass of CH3OH = 26u

Difference = (34-26)u

= 8u

similarly the difference in masses of (b) & (c) is also 8 u

C3H7OH > C2H5OH > CH3OH

Is the increasing order of carbon atoms in given compounds to get a family

Yes, it is a homologous series as the differ by same molecular formula and molecular mass

Hope it helps you
