Q5)Give reasons for the following-

( a)A small piece of SODIUM is observed to catch fire suddenly when it is kept in open for

A small piece of sodium catches fire suddenly when it is kept in air for some time as it burns in the presence of air and form the corresponding exides at the room temperature. Sodium reacts with the oxygen in air to form an oxide called the sodium oxide, and traces of yellow sodium peroxide.

Green leaves contain less water. Presence of water tends to increase the ignition temperature. So, the heap of green leaves do not catch fire easily.
