first step in respiration is the breakdown of glucose which is a six carbon molecule into 3 carbon molecule called pyruvate. this pyruvate can be further converted using various pathways and all of them release energy. since main purpose of respiration is to provide energy, pyruvate is an important component in cellular respiratory process.
