1. Sex ratio is the demographic concept that measures the proportion of males to females in a given population. It is usually measured as the number of males per 100 females. The ratio is expressed as in the form of 105:100, wherein this example there would be 105 males for every 100 females in a population.

2. Age structure is the proportion of a population in different age classes. Age structures of areas with slow growth, including developed countries such as the United States, still have a pyramidal structure, but with many fewer young and reproductive-aged individuals and a greater proportion of older individuals.

3. Literacy is popularly understood as an ability to read and write in at least one method of writing, an understanding reflected by mainstream dictionaries.

Correspondingly, the term illiteracy is considered to be the inability to read and write.

Some researchers suggest that the term “literacy” can be historically divided into the period before 1950, when literacy was understood solely as alphabetical literacy (word and letter recognition) and the period after 1950, when literacy slowly began to be considered as a wider concept and process, i.e., functional literacy.

For the most part, this article deals with the traditional definition of literacy – the ability to read and write – from a global perspective
