Q6. (a) Compare a mixture made up of iron filings and sulphur powder with the compound
iron sulphide on the following basis:
3)
(i) Test with magnet
(ii) Reaction with carbon disulphide solution
Answers
Answer:
Explanation:
(i) Test with Magnet:
On moving magnet over the mixture of iron fillings and sulphur powder, iron fillings gets attracted towards the magnet and stuck to it sulphur powder is left is the china dish.
While in the case of Iron Sulphide compound none of the properties of Iron or Sulphur are shown. When moving over the Iron Sulphide compound it does not get attracted to the magnet.
(ii)Reaction with carbon sulphide solution:
Addition of carbon disulphide to a mixture containing iron fillings and sulphur powder, leads to formation of a clear yellow solution when sulphur powder dissolves in carbon disulphide, on gentle shaking. Iron fillings being insoluble settle in the bottom. These can be separated by filtration.
There will be no reaction. Carbon disulphide is a colourless liquid. Iron sulphide is ionic compound while carbon disulphide is a non-polar molecule. Iron sulphide is not soluble in carbon disulphide and hence the carbon disulphide remains colourless
