When we factorise an algebraic expression, we write it as a product of factors. These factors may be numbers, algebraic variables or algebraic expressions. Expressions like 3xy, 5x2 y , 2x (y + 2), 5 (y + 1) (x + 2) are already in factor form. Their factors can be just read off from them, as we already know.

Each term of 10x + 5 has 5 as a factor, and 10x + 5 = 5(2x + 1). To factor an expression by removing common factors proceed as in example 1. 3x is the greatest common factor of all three terms. Next look for factors that are common to all terms, and search out the greatest of these.
