THAT IS SO BECAUSE THE NUMBER OF ELECTRONS INCREASE WHEN GOING TO THE RIGHT IN A PERIOD AND SO THE ELEMENTS PICK UP A NON METALLIC CHARACTER AS THEIR VALENCY BECOME NEGATIVE

Answer:

We know that in period electrons were added in the shells but the shells remain same. Metal has the ability to lose an electron. When an electron is added then the size of atom goes decreasing due to nuclear pull which ultimately makes metals difficult to lose electrons. Hence metallic character decreases while going from left to right in a period.
