Answer:

1) scale on x axis = 10 units

scale on y axis = 100 units

2) 1000 m

3) 100 m/ min

4) 40 min

Given:

Graph showing the flight of an aeroplane

To find:

i. The scales took on x-axis and y-axis

ii. The height up to which the aeroplane rises

iii. The speed of the aeroplane while rising

iv. Time for which the plane was in level flight

v. Total time taken by the flight

Solution:

The scale taken on the x-axis is 10 minutes and on the y-axis is 100 metres. The height up to which the aeroplane rises is 1000m. Its speed while rising is 100m/min. The plane was in level flight for 70 minutes and the entire flight took 130 minutes.

We can find the solution by following the given process-

We know that the required information can be derived from the graph given.

i. The scale taken on the axes is the length of each interval and can be obtained by taking the difference of consecutive intervals on axes.

The scale of x-axis=Difference between the length of two consecutive intervals

=10-0

=10 minutes

Similarly, the scale of y-axis=Difference between the length of two consecutive intervals

=100-0

=100 metres

ii. The height to which the aeroplane rises can be determined by seeing the highest point reached in the graph

The highest point is at 1000 metres.

So, the height up to which the aeroplane rises is 1000m.

iii. The speed of the aeroplane while rising can be determined by dividing the distance covered by it in the given time.

As per the graph, the plane rises to 1000 metres in 10 minutes.

So, the speed of the aeroplane while rising=Distance covered/Time taken

=1000/10

=100 metres/ minute

iv. The duration of the level flight is the line formed on the graph which is parallel to the x-axis.

Here, the height of the plane is constant at 1000m and then again at 450m.

So, the duration of the level flight=40+30

=70 minutes

So, the plane was in level flight for 70 minutes.

v. The total duration of the flight is the total time taken by the plane from the start to the finish.

As per the graph, the plane started at 0 minutes and landed at 130 minutes.

So, the total time taken by the flight=130 minutes

=2 hours 10 minutes

Therefore, the scale taken on the x-axis is 10 minutes and on the y-axis is 100 metres. The height up to which the aeroplane rises is 1000m. Its speed while rising is 100m/min. The plane was in level flight for 70 minutes and the entire flight took 130 minutes.
