SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • There are cow and hen in the field.

  • By counting heads, they are 52, the number of their legs is 176

TO DETERMINE

The number of hens

EVALUATION

Let the number of cow and hens are x and y respect

By first condition

x + y = 52 - - - - - - (1)

Each cow has 4 legs and each hen has 2 legs

By second condition

4x + 2y = 176

⇒ 2x + y = 88 - - - - - -(2)

Solving Equation 1 and Equation 2 we get

x = 36 & y = 16

Hence the required number of hens = 16
