Every continent on the Earth which are Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, North America, South America, and Antarctica existed as a single merged super-continent before 230-300 million years ago.

  • This super-continent was known as 'Pangaea', which was proposed by German geophysicist Alfred Wegener.

  • According to him, The Earth had a massive unified landmass called 'Pangaea' which consisted of every continent in the present world, and because of continental drift, the super-continent broke up 200 million years ago into fragments of land.

  • According to this theory, 'Pangaea' was positioned equatorially and was encircled by a super-ocean known as 'Panthalassa' and a 'Paleo-Tethys' Sea.

  • Pangaea was compiled during the Carboniferous period and broke up during the Mesozoic era into 'Laurasia' and 'Gondwanaland'.

  • These findings were formulated based on the ideas of continental drift which was also proposed by Wegener himself, which states that the continents were broken off because of the movements of various tectonic plates.

  • It is because of this continental drift that many mountains were formed. For example, the Himalayas was formed because of the formation of the Orogenic belt from the collision between Indian and Eurasian Plates.

  • In the present world also, the continents are moving apart at a rate of 2.5cm per year, and the size of the Atlantic ocean is increasing and the Pacific ocean is decreasing.
