Give the function of the following:
a) Rectum- The rectum is a chamber that begins at the end of the large intestine, immediately following the sigmoid colon, and ends at the anus (see also Overview of the Anus and Rectum). Ordinarily, the rectum is empty because stool is stored higher in the descending colon.
b) Caecum in ruminants- Ruminants have a large sac-like structure present between small and large intestine called caecum where the food containing cellulose by the action of bacteria which produces an enzyme called cellulase.
c) Pseudopodia- A pseudopod or pseudopodium is a temporary arm-like projection of a eukaryotic cell membrane that is developed in the direction of movement. Filled with cytoplasm, pseudopodia primarily consist of actin filaments and may also contain microtubules and intermediate filaments.
d) Large Intestine- The large intestine, also known as the large bowel, is the last part of the gastrointestinal tract and of the digestive system in vertebrates. Water is absorbed here and the remaining waste material is stored as faeces before being removed by defecation.
e) Gall Bladder- The gallbladder stores bile, a combination of fluids, fat, and cholesterol. Bile helps break down fat from food in your intestine. The gallbladder delivers bile into the small intestine.
