Answer:

For bituminous mixes, determination of bitumen content is considered to be one of the important facets of quality control during highway and airfield construction, and is achieved by extracting bitumen from the bituminous mix. In this paper the possibility of using kerosene oil as a solvent in the extraction of bitumen from bituminous mixes is explored. The possibility of using diesel oil for coarse mixes is also examined. Results based on the experimental data are presented. It is concluded that kerosene oil can be used as a solvent for dense mixes with cement as a filler. Use of kerosene oil for mixes where limestone dust is used as a filler is not recommended. For open graded mixes, kerosene oil gives better results as compared to those for dense mixes. Use of diesel oil has also not been found suitable as a solvent in the extraction of bitumen from bituminous mixes. (TRRL)
