Well here, just put in parentheses around 81+16 . Then you have to add them first. Here’s why: take a2+b2−−−−−−√=a+b . We square everything to get rid of the radical, and we get a2+b2=a2+2ab+b2 (visit my answer to see why). Which we know isn’t true, because we combine/cancel like terms and find 2ab=0 . That’s true in some cases, but not all.

Just remember that you cannot simplify that way.
