(i) There are in all 18 vertical columns i.e. 18 groups in the long form periodic table.
(ii) There are groups numbered from 1 to 18 from the left.
(iii) There are seven horizontal rows called periods. (iv) The elements of groups 1, 2 and 13 to 17 are called main group elements.
(v) The elements of group 3 to 12 are called transition elements.

Salient feature of long form of periodic table:
- This table consists of seven horizontal rows called periods.
- First period cons1sts of only two elements. Second and third periods consist of 8 elements each. Fourth and fifth periods consist of 18 elements each. Sixth period has 32 elements while seventh period also has 32 elements.
- Elements of a period show different properties.
- There are 18 vertical columns in the periodic table numbered I to 18 from left to right, which are called groups.
- The elements of a group show similar chemical properties.
- Elements are classified into four blocks depending upon the type of the subshell which gets the last electron.
I recall you that there are only six salient features or characteristics not seven.
