Q9. Metal Salt A used for adding taste to food, if reacts with dilute sulfuric acid produces a gas B.

(a) Name the substance A and B.

(b) What happens when blue Litmus paper is put on the mouth of the test tube in which the above reaction is going on?

(c) If blue Litmus paper is wet. Is there any change in the colour of the litmus paper? Why?

Answer:

(a) Substance A is Sodium Chloride or NaCl and substance B is Hydrochloric Gas or HCl.

(b) When a blue litmus paper is introduced to the mouth of the test tube it will turn red in colour. The HCl gas that liberates from the test tube is acidic in nature hence it turns blue litmus red.

(c) The HCl gas will turn the blue litmus paper red only if the blue litmus paper is wet or moist. This is because the gas dissolves in the water molecules present in the litmus paper and forms an acidic solution that is responsible for the colour change in the litmus paper.
