QI. Comprehension passage: Read the following extract and answer the given questions: A long time ago in China, there lived an Emperor. He was very fond of eating new and different kinds of food. For every meal he had, he wanted the food to look and taste different. He was also very hard to please, and whenever his mood changed, he wanted new kinds of food to be served. This was a constant worry to the courtiers, and especially to the cook, who had to keep thinking up new recipes and ways of making the food more attractive. The Emperor, however, was never satisfied, and soon sent the cook away. A new cook came the next day, but he too could not satisfy the Emperor and was sent away after a few days. Over the next few months, many cooks were hired but were all sent away sooner or later. When there were no more cooks who could be appointed, the Emperor was very sad. One day, when he was taking a walk, a man came up to him and said, ‘Your Majesty, I have come to offer you my services as a cook.’ The Emperor was very happy. He took the stranger to the palace and asked him, ‘What is the best and the tastiest food in the world?’ The new cook bowed and said, ‘Your Majesty, it is the onion biscuit noodle soup.’ The Emperor was surprised, as he had never heard of the dish before. ‘I wonder what it tastes like,’ he said. ‘Make it for me today and I shall see if I agree with you.’ The new cook, Yen, was a wise man, so when he prepared the soup, he made it tasteless. The Emperor had the soup but said nothing. When he began to look annoyed, Yen pretended not to understand. He politely said, ‘I hope Your Majesty knows that everyone has different tastes and what I like may not be what you like.’ The Emperor was angry. He said, ‘I do not care about other people! Tell me, what is the best food for an emperor?’ Yen said, ‘The best food is hunger, Your Majesty, but it can’t be cooked in the palace.’ The Emperor was willing to go anywhere to sample hunger and said so to Yen. Soon the two of them set out. Yen took him to places where food was being sold, knowing that the Emperor was hungry. But he did not stop. He kept the Emperor walking till they reached a deserted place. The Emperor sat down, grasping for breath. ‘I need food!’ he said. Yen had some dry biscuits in his bag and he gave them to the Emperor. The Emperor was so hungry that he kept on eating the dry biscuits. ‘I’ve never had such tasty biscuits before! You must tell me where you got them!’ he said. The cook smiled and said, ‘They are the same biscuits I used in the onion biscuit noodle soup this morning. But do you know why they taste so good now, Your Majesty?’ The Emperor realized that food tastes best when one is hungry. He now knew that he had been foolish, and vowed to be a better ruler. The Emperor appointed Yen governor of a province in China. After his meeting with Yen, the Emperor became a much better ruler. Questions based on the passage:
