first find the third side(x) which will be:

x^{2} + 15^{2} = 17^{2}

x = \sqrt{17^{2}  - 15^{2}  }

x = \sqrt{64\\}

x = 8

x is also equal to the side of the non- shaded triangle and all sides all equal.

so...>

area of the non-shaded triangle will be=

1/2 * 8 * 8

1/2 * 64

= 32 cm sq.

area of large triangle=

1/2 * 15 * 8

1/2 * 120

= 60 cm sq.

area of shaded region will be=

60 cm sq. - 32 cm sq.

= 28 cm sq.
