Quite a few years ago, I came across this quote from Albert Einstein. I believe the story is, a colleague asked him for his phone number, and Einstein reached for his telephone directory to look it up. “You don’t remember your own number?” the man asked, startled.
“No,” Einstein answered. “Why should I memorize something I can so easily get from a book?”
He supported the theory that we should not clutter our brains. Of course coming from someone who spent his life trying to scientifically explain the secrets of the world, this makes perfect sense. Why in the world would he want to take up brain power with meaningless clutter.
I started to apply this concept as often as possible. The practice of writing things down, typing things up, and keeping a record of information. Eventually things like access codes automatically become a part of memory, but I’m sure they are not taking up too much space.
After years of following and practicing Einstein’s idea. I now come across this concept as a first step in the process of getting organized and gaining clarity.
