therefore, the given quadratic equation has two real roots .

By completing the square

r^2-10r=-17

r^2-10r+100/4=-17+100/4

(r-10/2)^2=(-68+100)/4

(r-10/2)^2=8

r-10/2=+-2root2 [by square root both side]

r=+-2root2+10/2

therefore r = 5+2root2 or r = 5- 2root2
