Given

Hypotenuse = 25 cm

Difference between two sides = 5 cm

To find→

Length of other sides

Solution

Let the length of other sides be x cm and y cm , where x > y.

→x - y = 5\: \:\: \: (given) \\→  x = 5 + y\: \:\: \:  \: \:\: \: \: \: \:\: \: \: \: \:\: \: \\ → x -5 = y\: \:\: \:  \: \:\: \: \: \:\:\: \:\: \:\: \:  \:  \\→ y = x-5  ( \: from\: 1)

By using PGT,

(hyp)²= (opp)²+(adj)²

→(25)²= (x)²+(y)² \:  \: \:\: \: \: \: \:\: \: \: \: \:\:\:\: \: \: \: \:\: \: \: \: \:\: \\ →  625 = (x )²+(x-5)² {{( from 1)} }  \:  \:\: \\ →625 = x²+ x ²-10x+25 \: \:\:  \:\:\:\:\:  \\ →625 = 2x²-10x+25 \:\: \:  \: \:\: \: \: \:\: \:\: \: \: \: \:\: \:  \:  \\→   0 = 2x²-10x+25 -625   \:\: \: \: \:  \:\: \: \: \: \:\:  \: \\→2x²-10x-600 = 0 \:  \: \:\: \: \: \: \:\: \: \: \:  \:  \\ →2(x²-5x-300) = 0    \:\:  \: \:\: \: \: \: \:\: \: \: \:  \:\: \\ → x² - 5x - 300 = 0\:  \:  \:\: \: \: \: \:\:\:\: \: \: \: \:\: \: \: \: \:\:   \: \\→ x²-20x+15x-300 = 0\:   \: \: \:\:\:\: \: \: \: \:\: \: \: \: \:\:    \:  \\ →x(x-20)+ 15(x-20) = 0    \:  \: \: \: \:\: \:  \\ → (x-20)(x+15) = 0   \: \\ →x - 20  = 0 \:  \:  \: or \:  \: x  + 15= 0   \:\:  \: \: \: \:\: \: \: \: \:\:  \: \:   \\ →x = 20 \:  \: or \:  \: x =  - 15  \:  \:  \:  \:  \: \: \: \: \:\:\: \: \: \: \:\:\:\\

→ Rejecting x = -15

x = 20 cm

y = x-5 cm

y = 20-5 cm

y = 15 cm
