Qualification for Membership of Parliament

In order to be chosen a member of Parliament, a person must be a citizen of India and not less than 30 years of age in the case of Rajya Sabha and not less than 25 years of age in the case of Lok Sabha. Additional qualifications may be prescribed by Parliament by law.

  • He should be an Indian citizen
  • He should be at least 25 years of age
  • He should have his name in the electoral rolls in some part of the country
  • He should not be an insolvent that is he should not be in debt and should have the ability to meet his financial commitments
  • He should not hold any office of profit under the government
  • He should not be a proclaimed criminal
  • He should not be of unsound mind
