The stuffs required to solve this question :

  • Speed upstream = u - s
  • Speed downstream = u + s
  • Distance = Speed × Time
  • Time = Distance/Speed

where, u → speed of boat in still water,s → speed of stream

So,now just use this whatever thing and solve the question.

Speed in still water,u = 10 km/hr

Speed of stream,s = 2 km/hr

Ajay takes 4 hours more while swimming upstream.

Let the distance be x km.

Speed upstream = 10 - 2 = 8 km/hr

Speed downstream = 10 + 2 = 12 km/hr

Forming equations,

x/8 = x/12 + 4

x/8 - x/12 = 4

12x - 8x/ 96 = 4

4x/96 = 4

x/96 = 1

x = 96

∴ Distance travelled by Ajay is 96 km.

Now, let's switch to mentos zindagi.

You can calculate the distance for such cases by directly substituting the values in this formula :

Distance = [( - s²)t]/2s

Let's solve using this.

Distance = [(10² - 2²) × 4]/2 × 2

Distance = [ 100 - 4] × 2/2

Distance = 96

Now the third method using the formula Distance = Speed × Time.

Speed upstream = 8,Speed Downstream = 12,time taken for downstream journey = t,time taken for upstream journey = t + 4.

Now,the distant in both the cases will be same,so we can say :

12 × t = 8 × (t + 4)

12t = 8t + 32

12t - 8t = 32

4t = 32

t = 32/4

t = 8

∴ Distance = 12 × 8 = 96 km
