The Taj Mahal is an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan (reigned from 1628 to 1658), to house the tomb of his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It also houses the tomb of Shah Jahan, the builder. The tomb is the centerpiece of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex, which includes a mosque and a guest house, and is set in formal gardens bounded on three sides by a crenellated wall.Construction of the mausoleum was essentially completed in 1643 but work continued on other phases of the project for another 10 years. The Taj Mahal complex is believed to have been completed in its entirety in 1653 at a cost estimated at the time to be around 32 million rupees, which in 2015 would be approximately 52.8 billion rupees (U.S. $827 million). The construction project employed some 20,000 artisans under the guidance of a board of architects led by the court architect to the emperor, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri.

Answer:

A Visit to a Historical Place

A visit to a historical place is always an exciting experience. It is a fascinating adventure. I had one such experience during the last summer vacation, when I visited Agra with my family. I and my family reached Agra by train. After taking some rest,we undertook a visit to Agra. Agra is a wonderful historical city. There are many beautiful and worth-seeing historical monuments in India. But the Taj Mahal of Agra is the most beautiful of all. We visited the Taj Mahal on the last day of our trip to Agra. The TajMahal was about three hundred and fifty years ago by the Mughal Emperor,Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife,Mumtaz Begum. It is located on the bank of River Yamuna. The Taj Mahal is a dreamland of marbles. It has a fine layout. It is full white in colour. The green tufts of glass and the green shoots of hot Cyprus trees adorned its majestic beauty. The graves of the King and the Queen are situated under the dome in a dark chamber. The side walls are decorated with multi-coloured pieces of glass and couplets from the Holy Quran. The four minarets stood like watchmen at either side of the main building. By noon,we had completed our tour to the Taj Mahal and returned back to our hotel. I enjoyed our visit to the Taj Mahal tremendously. Our trip to Agra became an unforgettable experience because of the Taj Mahal.
