Though wars and territorial expressions played a major role in arousing the feeling of nationalism but culture, art, poetry, music, stories and language also played their role. To understand the role of culture in arousing the feeling of nationalism, let us take the example of Romanticism, a cultural movement which sought to develop a particular form of nationalist sentiment. Romantic artists were against the glorification of reasons and science and focused on emotional, institutional and mystical feelings. They wanted to share a collective heritage, a common cultural past as the basis of nation. Johann Gottfried was one of the famous Romantic German philosophers who claimed that true German culture was to be discovered among the common people-das volk.
