Let mass of metal M be m. Rest of the mass is due to oxygen.

M + xO2 -> MO(2x)  

now, equating mass: m+32x = (3/2)m which gives x=m/64

Oxidation state of O changes from 0 to -2. No. of O atoms in product = 2x.

So, eq. weight of the product = eq. weight of metal = (3m/2)/(2 X 2x) = 24

39. Judging with the mass of both metal and oxide, the mass of the element in grams that combines with 8 grams of oxygen.

Therefore, the equivalent mass of the metal oxide approximately reaches 20

so we can assume 22 as the answer
