Historically speaking Ashoka the Great gave up fighting after winning the kalinga war, kalinga was then the current state of Odisha.

Now it's a very complicated thing to explain why he stopped fighting!

Going back to history Ashoka the Great was very lovingly(sarcasm) known as “Chand Ashok” by the people for his brutality & ferocious nature. He murdered his own brothers brutally to acquire the thrown. If crual had a synonym it was him.

He was also a great administrator he conquered whole of the Indian sub-continent with the exception of current states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu(the only emperor to achieve that feat every patch of land under him no friendly kingdoms) apparently the first emperor to unify whole sub continent as one.
