1) He tells his story with a sigh as he is recounting a past event of his life which shaped him as he is today. the poem has a positive vibes that's why I ll say that he was happily sighing remembering it.

2) No, I don't think the post would have been happier if he travelled the first road as that road was taken by many and it lead to a boring old life. the poet might've been feeling a bit adventurous and wanting to venture out to the world always makes you more wise.
