Answer:

To choose the members of the 6th Lok Sabha, general elections were held in India between March 16 and March 20 of that year. The Emergency era, which the elections were held during, ended on March 21st, 1977, just before the results were made public.

Explanation:

The 27 Indian states and union territories were represented by these sixth general elections, which were held for 542 seats in single-member constituencies.  Up till the 2004 Indian general elections for the 14th Lok Sabha, these 542 seats remained the same.

The primary debate topic in the 1977 elections was the Emergency that was proclaimed by the Congress administration led by Indira Gandhi. During the national emergency, which lasted from 25 June 1975 to 21 March 1977, civil freedoms were suspended and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was given extensive authority.

Gandhi suffered during the elections as a result of her choice, which made her very unpopular. Gandhi demanded new elections on January 18 while also releasing some political prisoners. Until she was removed from power and a new prime minister took charge, many people remained behind bars.  The Indian National Congress (Organization), the Bhartiya Jana Sangh, the Bhartiya Lok Dal, and the Praja Socialist Party, four opposition groups, resolved to contest the elections under a single banner known as the Janata alliance on January 20.  On the vote papers, the alliance utilized the Bhartiya Lok Dal symbol as their own.

The Janata Alliance reminded voters of the excesses and human rights abuses committed during the Emergency, such as the forced sterilization of political leaders and their incarceration. Election results will determine whether India would have "democracy or dictatorship," according to the Janata campaign.  The Congress appeared uneasy. Babu Jagjivan Ram, the minister of agriculture and irrigation, left the party in the first week of February. Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna and Nandini Satpathy were some noteworthy Congress stalwarts who left the party before the election.
