Simply put, the Storming of the Bastille was the start, the flashpoint, of the French Revolution, which lasted ten years from the Storming on 14 July 1789 to 9 November 1799, when the Directory was overthrown by Napoleon (in the Coup of 18 Brumaire) and replaced by the French Consulate, leading in 5 more years to Napoleon’s coronation as emperor, and then ten more years (and 100 days) to the Bourbon Restoration.
Beyond the Storming of the Bastille, the French Revolution ushered in a number of significant, long-lasting effects:
It began the trend toward the end of monarchies in Europe and the rise of democracies both in Europe and Latin America.
It dramatically weakened the power of the Church, whether Catholic or Protestant, giving rise to the nationalist state.
It introduced the metric system to the world.
It introduced widespread conscription (the draft) as a means of raising large and powerful armies.
