Question :

1. Identify PVC and bakelite as thermoplastics or thermosetting plastics? Differentiate between
PVC and bakelite.


2. A poor boy used to go door to door and collect all the plastic pepsi (cold drink) bottles, pickle
jars and oil bottles. His mother used to display these bottles at the ‘mangal bazaar' in their area.
These bottles were bought by poor ladies of her colony. What use could the poor ladies of the colony bring these bottles into?

Answer:

The major difference is that thermosetting plastics if once molded cannot be softened on heating. On the other hand, thermoplastics while heated get deformed.

Examples of the plastic are given below-

Thermoplastic - PVC and polyethylene

Thermosetting plastic - Melamine and Bakelite.
