(1) The one great advantage I enjoyed in my younger days was the literary and
artistic atmosphere which pervaded at home. I remember my cousin Gunendra. He
kept the house filled with his personality. His large gracious heart embraced alike
relatives, friends, guests and dependents. His wide appreciation of art and talent
kept him constantly radiant with enthusiasm. New idea of festivity or frolic,
theatrical or other entertainment, found in him a ready patron.
(2) I remember how a trifling circumstance earned for me the special regard of
Gunendra. Never had I got a prize at school, except once for good conduct. My
nephew Satya was the best in lessons and was awarded a prize at an examination.
As we came home that day, I jumped off the carriage, to give the great news to
Gunendra.
(3) Satya has got a prize. ‘I shouted, as Iran to him. He drew mc close and smilingly
asked, ‘and have you got no prize?’ ‘NO, not I. It’s Satya,’ I said excitedly. My
genuine pleasure at Satya’s success touched him and he remarked to his friends
that this was a very commendable trait. I had earned a prize for not getting prize.
