Answer:
Stand Watie was born into the Cherokee Nation in 1806. He studied at the Moravian Mission School, where he learned English. In 1835, he was among those who signed the Treaty of New Echota. By signing this treaty, he gave up his home in Georgia for property on Indian Territory, which is in present-day Oklahoma.
Watie supported the Confederates during the Civil War. He was the leader of the First Regiment of the Cherokee Mounted Volunteers. He was soon promoted to brigadier general. He was the last commander to surrender in June 1865. Watie returned to Indian Territory after the war and spent his remaining years trying to develop the territory.
