The methods that are generally used for preparing the chlorides are:

(i) Copper (II) chloride - (C) Direct combination.

Cu + Cl2 CuCl2

(ii) Iron (II) chloride - (A) The action of acid on a metal.

Fe + 2 HCl → FeCl2 + H2

(iii) Iron (III) chloride - (B) The action of acid on an oxide (or) carbonate.

Fe2O3 + 6 HCl 2 FeCl3 + 3 H2O

(iv) Lead (II) chloride - (E) Precipitation (double decomposition).

Pb(NO3)2 + 2 NaCl → PbCl2 + 2 NaNO3

(v) Sodium chloride - (D) Neutralization of alkali by an acid.

NaOH + HCl NaCl + H2O
