in series connection or combination the resistance is more then the individual resistances of the connected resistors.

in parallel connection or combination the resistance is less than individual resistances of the connected resistors.

Explanation:

by the word series it is meant that all the resistors are connected end to end like characters of a train. in this case the equivalent resistance is the sum of the individual resistances connected. hence the total resistance will be more then any individual resistance of any resistor.

by parallel connection it is meant that all the resistors are connected in parallel just like the two hemispheres connected by the diameter. in this case the equivalent resistance is the sum of inverse of the resistances of the individual resistance. hence the total resistance is less than the individual resistances of any resistor
