I failed to make a decision.
A few years ago, I appeared for the interview in some companies.
I got selected and offered by all the companies. But, I got confused whom to say, “No” or “Yes”.
I had a week time to respond to them.
I sought the opinions of some colleagues and friends. Asked my parents. But, the more I heard their thoughts, the more I was confused. And, I did not make any decision.
I failed.
That day I felt making decisions become difficult when you got multiple choices and alternates. It becomes one of the mental draining activity of your day.
The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz is the book that changed the way I look at choices and alternatives. I realized less is better.
The more you think about it, more complex it will become to take a decision.
And, it affects your abilities to make all other decisions in the day and life as well.
Barry explained how choices contribute to anxiety, fear, dissatisfaction, regret and delay in decision making.
Having alternatives and choices are good in our lives as it helps to choose the best of the best. But too much of a good thing is bad for our mental and emotional state.
And, Barry shared some helpful ways to pick better choices and speed up the decision making process.
