Given :   (a) To subtract (-8) from 13, we add ...  to 13.

(b) To subtract 5 from (- 12), we add ... to (-13)

(c) The negative of a negative integer is a ...  integer.

(d) An integer when added to its opposite gives ... as the sum.

To Find : Values to fill in the blanks

Solution:

(a) To subtract (-8) from 13, we add ...  to 13.

subtract (-8) from 13,

= 13 - (-8)

= 13 + 8

= 8 + 13

Hence we add 8 to 13

(b) To subtract 5 from (- 12), we add ...  to (-13)

-12 - 5

= -17

= -4 + (-13)

Hence we add -4 to (-13)

(c) The negative of a negative integer is a POSITIVE integer.

-(-a) = a  where a is positive

(d) An integer when added to its opposite gives 0  as the sum.

a + (-a) = a - a = 0
